Japan Set to Attempt Historic Mars Moon Sample-Return Mission

Japan is preparing for an unprecedented space mission that could help scientists answer one of the biggest mysteries surrounding Mars and its moons.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) plans to launch its Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission toward Phobos, the larger and innermost of Mars’ two moons, in October 2026.

The ambitious mission is designed to do something no spacecraft has successfully accomplished before: collect samples directly from the surface of a Martian moon and return them to Earth for detailed study.

A Journey to Phobos

Once launched, the MMX spacecraft will travel to the Mars system and spend years studying Phobos from orbit. The mission will deploy a small rover onto the moon’s surface before making a brief landing to collect more than 10 grams of rock and dust.

Those samples could provide crucial clues about the origins of Phobos and, potentially, the early history of Mars itself.

Scientists remain uncertain about how Phobos formed. One leading possibility is that it was created from material blasted into space by a massive impact on Mars. Another theory suggests that Phobos may actually be a captured asteroid that became trapped by Mars’ gravity.

Studying material directly from its surface could help scientists determine which explanation is closer to the truth.

International Collaboration

The mission is also an example of international cooperation in planetary exploration. NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) are among the international partners supporting the ambitious project.

If the mission proceeds as planned, the samples collected from Phobos are expected to return to Earth in 2031, where scientists will be able to examine them using laboratory instruments far more powerful than those that can be carried aboard a spacecraft.

The returned material could provide information about the composition, age and formation of Phobos while also helping researchers better understand the evolution of the Mars system.

A Small Sample, A Big Scientific Question

Although the spacecraft will return only a relatively small amount of material, the scientific value could be enormous.

A few grams of ancient dust and rock may contain clues preserved for billions of years—information that could help scientists reconstruct the violent history of Mars and its moons.

For JAXA and its international partners, MMX represents more than another journey into space. It is an attempt to retrieve a physical piece of another world and bring it home for humanity to study.

Somewhere on the surface of Phobos, the history of the Mars system may have been preserved for billions of years. In 2031, scientists could finally have the opportunity to read part of that history.
