The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old woman, Khadija Ibrahim, of Rikoto, Zuru Local Government Area, in connection with the alleged theft of a newborn baby in the area.
The incident reportedly occurred on July 23, 2026, when the suspect allegedly approached Fatima Muhammad, who had just given birth, and offered to assist her by fetching hot water. Instead, she allegedly fled with the newborn.
According to the Police, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had allegedly been experiencing social and emotional pressure over not having a child, particularly as some of her peers had already become mothers.
The investigation further indicated that Ibrahim had allegedly deceived her husband for about nine months, making him believe that she was pregnant.
Police said that following the birth of Fatima Muhammad’s baby, the suspect allegedly took the newborn and presented the child to her husband as their own.
Following sustained investigation, the suspect was arrested on August 14, 2026, while the missing baby was successfully recovered and reunited with the biological mother.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigators continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. The Command said she would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation and in accordance with applicable laws.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Umar M. Hadejia, psc, MNIM, commended the officers involved for their diligence and professionalism, particularly their efforts which led to the safe recovery of the child and arrest of the suspect.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable members of society, while assuring the public that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
The Police Command also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities involving children to the appropriate authorities.
