Libyan authorities have deported 80 Nigerian migrants held in various detention centres across the country as part of ongoing efforts to curb irregular migration and decongest overcrowded holding facilities.
According to reports, the deportation was carried out in coordination with the Nigerian Embassy in Tripoli and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which has been facilitating the voluntary repatriation of stranded migrants across North Africa.
The deportees, comprising men and women, were flown from Tripoli International Airport to Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, where officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) received them.
Sources said the returnees had been detained for immigration-related offences, including overstaying their visas and attempting to cross into Europe through irregular routes.

Nigeria has in recent years intensified efforts to protect its citizens trapped in conflict zones or migration crises, with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs leading coordination of such evacuations.
