Hajiya Sutura Shehu-Shagari, the last surviving wife of Nigeria’s former President, Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, has passed away at the age of 89.
Family sources confirmed that Hajiya Sutura died peacefully in the early hours of Sunday after a brief illness. Until her passing, she was known for her humility, compassion, and unwavering dedication to family and community.
As the matriarch of the Shagari family, she remained a symbol of grace and continuity, preserving the legacy of her late husband, Nigeria’s first democratically elected president in the Second Republic.
Born in 1925 in Shagari town, Sokoto State, Shehu Shagari served as President of Nigeria from 1979 to 1983, following a distinguished career as a teacher, administrator, and politician. His government was overthrown in a military coup in December 1983, but he continued to be respected as a statesman and elder figure in Nigerian politics until his death in 2018.
Hajiya Sutura will be laid to rest in Shagari town, Sokoto State, according to Islamic rites.
