Residents of Agwan Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State have been thrown into panic following a deadly midnight attack by gunmen that left an unspecified number of people feared dead.

Eyewitness accounts revealed that the assailants, riding on motorcycles, stormed the community on Sunday evening around 7:30 p.m., opening fire indiscriminately as residents went about their daily activities. The sudden caused widespread fear, forcing many to flee for safety.

As of the time of filing this report, the exact number of casualties remains unclear, with residents still working to identify victims of the attack.

Sources within the community said the gunmen fled immediately after carrying out the assault, leaving behind chaos and confusion.

In the aftermath, tensions escalated as angry youths reportedly blocked major roads in protest. Unconfirmed reports indicate that several commercial tricycle operators, commonly known as NAPEP riders, and their passengers were attacked during the unrest that followed.

Security forces under Operation Enduring Peace have since been deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent further escalation of violence.

The spokesperson for the operation, Captain Polycarp Oteh, said details of the incident would be made public after preliminary investigations are concluded.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm as efforts continue to stabilise the situation and bring those responsible to justice.
