Momo Vendor Suffers Burn Injuries During Road Clearance Operation in Jaipur

A road clearance operation ahead of a VIP convoy in the Indian city of Jaipur has sparked widespread public debate after a 27-year-old street food vendor sustained serious burn injuries.

The victim, identified as Reshu Gupta, reportedly suffered burns during an operation conducted before the movement of the convoy of the Chief Minister of Rajasthan.

According to Gupta, she was operating her roadside momo stall when police officers directed vendors to vacate the area. She alleged that an officer pushed her momo steamer during the exercise, causing boiling water to spill onto her body.

The incident allegedly left her with burn injuries to her left arm, chest and thighs. Videos circulating on social media show the vendor in visible distress, crying and seeking assistance shortly after the incident.

Speaking about the ordeal, Gupta said she depends on the momo business to support her family. She also expressed concern about the impact of the injuries on her future, noting that she remains unmarried and fears the long-term effects of the burns.

The incident has attracted widespread sympathy online, with many social media users calling for a thorough investigation and accountability if misconduct is established.

Police authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway but have not verified the allegations made by the vendor. Officials said they are reviewing CCTV footage and other available evidence to determine exactly how the incident occurred.

Authorities stressed that no conclusion has yet been reached regarding the circumstances surrounding the injuries and that appropriate action will be taken if any wrongdoing is established during the investigation.

The case has reignited discussions in India about the conduct of road clearance operations linked to VIP movements and the need to balance security requirements with the rights and livelihoods of ordinary citizens, particularly street vendors who rely on roadside businesses for income.

As investigations continue, rights advocates and members of the public have urged authorities to ensure a transparent inquiry and provide support for the injured vendor while the facts of the case are established.
