NCC Begins Review of National Telecommunications Policy to Shape Nigeria’s Digital Future

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commenced a two-day stakeholders’ policy review workshop in Lagos aimed at reviewing the National Telecommunications Policy (NTP) 2000 and developing strategies for Nigeria’s evolving digital ecosystem.

The workshop, taking place at the Marriott Hotel in Ikeja, brings together key industry stakeholders to assess progress made under the existing framework, highlight major achievements and chart a path for the future of the country’s telecommunications sector.

Speaking at the opening session, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Aminu Maida, said the communications sector has grown beyond a standalone industry into a critical foundation supporting economic and social development.

He stressed the need for stronger policy frameworks to address emerging technologies and evolving digital realities, including artificial intelligence, satellite broadband, the Internet of Things (IoT), digital sovereignty, network resilience, sustainable innovation and quality of user experience.

According to Maida, strategic digital transformation across sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, transportation and trade could significantly boost Nigeria’s economy.

Citing industry data, he noted that increased digitalisation could contribute additional growth to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), create millions of jobs and generate substantial tax revenue.

The NCC boss also highlighted the importance of expanding regulatory focus to include emerging issues such as cybersecurity, data governance, digital financing and online safety.

Technical sessions at the workshop are expected to examine the impact and legacy of the National Telecommunications Policy 2000, strategies for reducing the digital divide, global telecommunications policy approaches and stakeholder recommendations on proposed policy reforms.

The engagement is expected to contribute to efforts aimed at developing a more inclusive, resilient and future-focused digital economy in Nigeria.
