The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 34-year-old South African woman, Qhina Beauty, with 36.65 kilogrammes of cocaine at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
The agency also arrested a 62-year-old Nigerian-American grandmother, Anetor Gloria Ubong, after allegedly discovering 9.45kg of cannabis, commonly known as “loud”, in her luggage.
According to the NDLEA, Beauty was arrested on October 7 while preparing to board a flight to South Africa via Doha, Qatar. The cocaine was reportedly concealed in her travel bags.
Further investigations led to the arrest of a 46-year-old Lagos-based car dealer, Uchenna Victor Umunnakwe, who was allegedly linked to the cocaine shipment.
In a separate operation, Ubong was arrested on October 21 after arriving in Lagos from Houston, United States. A search of her checked-in luggage reportedly uncovered 9.45kg of cannabis.
In Delta State, NDLEA operatives also arrested Helen Bakporo Samson, a 46-year-old physically challenged woman, at Enhere Junction, Warri, with 6kg of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis.
The agency further disclosed that its operatives conducted coordinated anti-drug operations across Lagos, Delta, Kano, Bauchi, Niger, Edo, Ondo, Taraba and Oyo states, resulting in additional arrests and seizures of illicit drugs.
The operations form part of the NDLEA’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse across the country.
The suspects’ arrests and the seizures are subject to further investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings.
