The North East Development Commission (NEDC) in collaboration with the Borno State government is training 115 youths on waste management and renewable energy.

The five-day training was to empower youths with starter-packs and other kits in converting massive wastes to create employment and wealth.

Flagging off the training session, yesterday (Monday), in Maiduguri, the NEDC’s Managing Director, Mohammed Alkali disclosed: “The training of youths and women today, was to fully engage them in the conversion and processing of massive wastes to create wealth and jobs.

He said the categories of wastes; are located at refuge dump sites, drainages and other agricultural waste from grains, sugarcane and livestock.

Alkali, represented by the NEDC State Coordinator, Mohammed Umar, said that the waste management training is simultaneously taking place in five other states to mitigate climate change in the Northeast.

According to him, renewable energy could also overcome the challenges of the recent removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government.

Dr. Zainab Chillube, the Training Coordinator said: “Our youths and women should look inwards by converting wastes into wealth creation and jobs in the environment and agriculture sectors of the economy.

She said that the trainees are to be empowered with starter packs and other kits to mitigate climate change through waste and water shed management.

While citing Lake Chad, she noted that lake has receded from 25, 000 square kilometres in 1950’s to 1, 540 sqkms or 0.1 per cent of the present lake size.

She attributed the 73-year recede of lake to climate change and human activities in the Lake Chad Basin in Nigeria, and other two countries.

Chillube, therefore, urged the youths to take advantage of their intensive training to mitigate climate change in the country.
