The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with India, particularly in the areas of defence, security, capacity building and sustainable development.

Ambassador Ahmed stated this while receiving a delegation of participants from the 66th Course of the National Defence College, New Delhi, India, during a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

The delegation, led by Ms. Anvita Sinha, is in Nigeria on a foreign study tour aimed at gaining deeper insights into the country’s socio-economic development, foreign policy direction, security landscape and strategic outlook.

Welcoming the visitors, the Permanent Secretary described Nigeria and India as longstanding partners whose relationship is built on shared democratic values, historical ties, expanding economic cooperation and collaboration within regional and international organisations.

He noted that the visit provides an important opportunity to strengthen mutual understanding and explore new areas of cooperation between both countries.

Ambassador Ahmed particularly acknowledged India’s contributions to Nigeria’s defence and security sector through military training, professional development programmes and institutional support, which he said have helped strengthen capacity and promote regional stability.

During an interactive session, participants discussed Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities, regional and global geopolitical developments, security challenges and prospects for enhanced Nigeria-India cooperation.

The Permanent Secretary stressed the importance of greater collaboration among developing nations, noting that countries of the Global South must continue to work together to address common challenges and advance shared interests.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to promoting South-South cooperation through platforms such as BRICS and other multilateral initiatives aimed at fostering economic growth, development and international cooperation among emerging economies.

The visit forms part of ongoing efforts to deepen diplomatic engagement and strengthen strategic partnerships between Nigeria and India in key sectors of mutual interest.
