Nigeria is a nation brimming with potential, a land rich in culture, resources, and resilient people. As the country navigates its way through challenges, stories of extraordinary individuals making remarkable strides in their respective fields continue to serve as a source of hope and inspiration. The 6th edition of Our Nigeria Awards, set to hold on January 30, 2024, celebrates such individuals whose excellence and contributions pave the way for a brighter Nigeria.
This year’s recipients represent diverse fields, from governance to entrepreneurship, public service, and military leadership. Their outstanding achievements testify to the transformative power of excellence in building a better Nigeria.

Excellence as a Catalyst for National Development
The stories of these nominees reflect a shared commitment to excellence, a quality that Nigeria desperately needs to unlock its full potential. Their achievements serve as a reminder that, despite the challenges, Nigeria is a nation of boundless possibilities. By fostering innovation, promoting inclusivity, and prioritising collaboration, these individuals are charting a path toward a prosperous future.
Excellence, however, must be complemented by collective action. The achievements of the few must inspire the resolve of the many. Government, private sector, and civil society must work together to address systemic challenges like poverty, insecurity, and unemployment, ensuring that the progress made by individuals translates to national transformation.
Below, I present to you the 2024 honourees’ and the impact of their contributions.
1. Man of the Year: Alhaji Aliko Dangote, GCON
As Africa’s foremost industrialist, Alhaji Aliko Dangote has redefined possibilities in business and economic development. Through the Dangote Group, he has spearheaded advancements in critical sectors like cement, agriculture, and oil refining. His groundbreaking Dangote Refinery, the largest in Africa, represents a monumental leap toward energy independence for Nigeria and the continent at large. Additionally, his investments in food production have significantly enhanced food security across Africa. Beyond his business acumen, Alhaji Dangote’s philanthropic initiatives, through the Aliko Dangote Foundation, have had a transformative impact on healthcare, education, and disaster relief. His dedication to job creation and nation-building continues to inspire millions, earning him the title of Man of the Year 2024.
2. TY Buratai Excellence Award in Military Leadership: Lt-Gen. Lamidi Adeosun and Brig-Gen. Michael Mukokomani
Lt-Gen. Lamidi Adeosun’s exceptional contributions to Nigeria’s security architecture and Brig-Gen. Michael Mukokomani’s leadership in fostering regional stability in Southern Africa exemplifies the ideals of military service. This award underscores the importance of collaboration in addressing Africa’s shared security challenges. Their dedication to duty, strategic foresight, and unwavering commitment to peace have not only strengthened the defense systems of their respective regions but have also fostered international cooperation in combating transnational threats. 3. Legislator of the Year: Sen Abdul-Azeez Yar’adua
Senator Yar’adua’s legislative acumen and dedication to addressing pressing national issues have earned him recognition as Legislator of the Year. His efforts to promote effective policymaking and governance reflect the critical role of lawmakers in nation-building. Known for his proactive approach to constituency engagement, Senator Yar’adua has championed bills and motions aimed at fostering socio-economic development, enhancing security, and improving infrastructure. 4. Game Changer of the Year: HE Muhammad Umar Bago
Governor Umar Bago of Niger State has demonstrated innovative leadership in grassroots development and infrastructural expansion. His strategic approach to addressing critical developmental challenges has resulted in the initiation and completion of several impactful projects across the state. By prioritizing education, healthcare, and sustainable economic growth, he has fostered an environment of inclusivity and progress. His ability to implement transformative policies has set new benchmarks for governance, earning him the prestigious Game Changer of the Year 2024 title.
5. Governor of the Year Development: Mallam Umar Namadi
Mallam Umar Namadi, Governor of Jigawa State, is celebrated for prioritizing rural development. Under his leadership, Jigawa State has witnessed remarkable progress in areas such as healthcare, education, and rural infrastructure. 6. Collin Powell Meritorious Award in Soldiering: Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar

8. Nelson Mandela Award in Public Service: Barr Musa Kaibo Esq

10. IGP Gambo Jimeta Excellence Award in Policing: AIG Benneth Igweh

12. General Excellence Award in National Security Development: Mr. Ado Muazu

14. Lifetime Achievement Award in Scholarship: Prof. O.O. Fayomi

15. Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar Excellence Award in Public Service: Hajiya Neemat Abdul-Karim
