Nigerian-American Ugo Ugochukwu Makes History as 2026 FIA Formula 3 Champion

Nigerian-American racing driver Ugo Ugochukwu has been crowned the 2026 FIA Formula 3 champion after a dramatic title decider at the season finale in Madrid, Spain.

The 19-year-old Campos Racing driver secured the championship by finishing second in the final race at the newly opened Madring circuit, overcoming British rival Freddie Slater to claim the title.

Ugochukwu entered the Madrid weekend 15 points behind Slater but produced a strong comeback across the final round. By the time the decisive race began, the two drivers were level on points, leaving the championship to be decided by their final performances.

Starting second on the grid, Ugochukwu maintained his position throughout the 19-lap race and crossed the finish line in second place, while Slater finished eighth. The result was enough to secure Ugochukwu the championship by 14 points.

The victory marks a historic achievement as Ugochukwu becomes the first American driver to win the FIA Formula 3 Championship.

Born in New York to Nigerian parents, Ugochukwu has progressed through the junior single-seater racing categories and previously competed as a McLaren junior driver. He now joins the list of Formula 3 champions who have gone on to compete in Formula 1, including Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto.

His triumph also delivered a major milestone for Campos Racing, which secured the 2026 drivers’ championship after already winning the teams’ title.

With Formula 3 serving as an important step on the pathway to Formula 2 and eventually Formula 1, Ugochukwu’s breakthrough season further strengthens his ambitions of reaching the pinnacle of motorsport.

His championship-winning performance in Madrid has now placed the Nigerian-American driver firmly among the young talents to watch on the road to Formula 1.
