Nigerian Army Partners with NIGCOMSAT to Enhance Communication and Military Operations

The Nigerian Army has announced a partnership with the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) to enhance its communication capabilities and improve military operations. This development was confirmed by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, during a meeting with the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NIGCOMSAT, Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idereyen, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, 16 May 2024.

Lieutenant General Lagbaja emphasized the importance of this partnership, noting that it would provide reliable and secure communication services, enabling the Nigerian Army to access a range of satellite-based services such as telecommunication, navigation, and surveillance. These capabilities are expected to significantly enhance the operational efficiency and effectiveness of the military.

The COAS acknowledged the critical role of NIGCOMSAT, particularly in supporting Army operations in the North East and North West regions. He reiterated the Army’s commitment to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Executive Order 5, which mandates the patronage of made-in-Nigeria goods and services. Describing NIGCOMSAT’s products as top-notch, General Lagbaja expressed his desire to expand the existing cooperation between the Army and NIGCOMSAT. He also pledged support for the launch of a new satellite to further improve Army operations.

In her remarks, Mrs. Egerton-Idereyen praised the Nigerian Army for its dedication to national service and pledged ongoing support through advanced technology. She announced NIGCOMSAT’s plan to launch a satellite specifically designed to enhance the capabilities of the Armed Forces, acknowledging the Army’s critical role in addressing the nation’s security challenges.

Mrs. Egerton-Idereyen highlighted the longstanding relationship between NIGCOMSAT and the Nigerian Army, expressing confidence that this partnership would have far-reaching positive implications for military operations and national security, while also leveraging satellite technology for economic growth and development.
