Nigerian sprinter Tobi Amusan has made waves at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston by setting a new African women’s indoor record in the 60 meters, clocking an impressive 7.75 seconds. This achievement replaces the previous record of 7.77 seconds set in Kazakhstan earlier this year.
Despite her record-breaking performance, Amusan secured second place in Boston, with American athlete Tia Jones finishing first in 7.72 seconds and Bahamian competitor Devynne Chalton following closely behind with a time of 7.76 seconds.

This remarkable feat comes after Amusan had already surpassed the African record in her first race of the season, outperforming her compatriot Gloria Alozie’s record. In January, she set a new African women’s 60-meter hurdles indoor record with a time of 7.77 seconds at the Astana Indoor Meet in Kazakhstan, breaking Alozie’s longstanding continental mark of 7.82 seconds set in 1999.
At the Astana Indoor Meet, the 26-year-old sprinter stormed to victory in the 60m hurdles final, finishing ahead of American athlete Nia Ali and Ireland’s Sarah Lavin.
Amusan’s illustrious career includes becoming the first Nigerian to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in 2022. Additionally, she made headlines by breaking the women’s 100m hurdles world record on her way to securing this historic triumph.
