NNL: Wikki FC fans fear relegation, decry lack of sports administrator
Wikki FC supporters in Bauchi State are growing anxious about the prospect of remaining relegated by the conclusion of the 2024 Nigeria National League (NNL) season, amidst concerns over the absence of a sports administrator serving as the club’s chairman.
The team’s recent 2-0 defeat to Nasarawa United last Saturday in Lafiya has heightened these fears, pushing them down to the 2nd position with 23 points from twelve matches this season.
Expressing their concerns, Adamu Saidu remarked, “As it stands, if Wikki Tourists lose their upcoming match against Yobe Desert, they could find themselves in the relegation zone.”
He emphasized the need for effective sports administration, asserting, “We need someone who understands sports, speaks its language, and can effectively manage the club to steer us away from relegation and into triumph for the premier league.”
James Bawa, another sports enthusiast, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “The management of Wikki needs to take drastic measures, or else they risk perpetual relegation.”
While acknowledging the efforts of the state government, Bawa stressed the importance of the club’s management putting in extra effort to secure positive results in their upcoming matches.
However, the situation remains precarious, as failing to secure even a single point in the next few games could see Wikki plummeting into the bottom three, as noted by Bawa.
In a recent press briefing, the newly appointed Chairman, Adamu Gotal, hinted that the process of turning things around could be protracted. He remarked, “I didn’t expect to solve everything in one day. We need to inject more aggression into our game, increase our pace, and win more competitive duels.”
Gotal expressed gratitude to the government for their support and financial backing of the club, acknowledging the challenges ahead.
