NNPC Extends Petrol Discount to October 31, Says Initiative Is Not Subsidy Restoration

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has extended its petrol discount initiative across its retail stations nationwide until October 31, 2026, as part of efforts to ease the impact of rising fuel prices on Nigerians.

The company said the initiative was intended to provide relief to households, businesses and commuters amid elevated global crude oil prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, October 9, NNPC Ltd reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s efforts to cushion the effects of rising petrol prices on the economy.

The company said the discount, initially introduced on October 1 to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, would now continue until the end of the month.

NNPC Ltd noted that higher petrol prices had increased the cost of transportation and business operations, placing additional pressure on families and livelihoods.

It explained that the discount was a customer-relief initiative and should not be interpreted as a return of the petroleum subsidy discontinued in May 2023.

The company also clarified that the initiative applies exclusively to NNPC Retail outlets and does not establish a uniform national pump price or change the market-based pricing framework for petroleum products.

The extension follows the October 8 statement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on measures to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices.

NNPC Ltd said it would continue collaborating with the Federal Government and other stakeholders to support reliable fuel supply and provide practical relief to consumers while maintaining commercially responsible operations.

The company urged Nigerians to disregard claims that the discount represented a restoration of the petrol subsidy, assuring the public that it would continue to communicate clearly about its pricing initiatives and their duration.
