Northeast Star Magazine to honour Buratai with Lifetime Achievement Award in Military Leadership

By Matthew Eloyi

The Management and Editorial Board of Northeast Star Magazine is set to honour ex-Chief of Army Staff and Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai (Rtd.), with Lifetime Achievement Award in Military Leadership.

This was disclosed by Dr. Abubakar Mohammed, Publisher, Northeast Star Magazine. He said the decision was reached at the 56th Editorial Board meeting which took place on the 17th of August in Maiduguri, Borno State.

According to Dr. Mohammed, the choice of Buratai for the Award is because of his giant strides in military leadership which has strengthened the Army and the Nigerian military in general.

In his words, “In many ways, Ambassador Tukur Yusufu Buratai (Retired Lieutenant General and Former Chief of Army Staff of the Nigerian Army), gave a sense of direction to the Nigerian Army all through the years he served from 2015-2021. Notwithstanding the various challenges he encountered during his tenure, he crossed the final line of his military career gallantly.

“Like a General worth his pips, he led by example. In a country where some of those who preceded him can barely touch their toes because of an ample paunch, Buratai has been seen doing push-ups and other exercises that should otherwise strain a man of his age. He still looks military-trim with a disciplined physique, suggesting a man of moderate lifestyle, a man not given to excess.”

Ambassador Buratai is Nigeria’s former and 20th Chief of Army Staff in the Chronicles of Command. He took over the Command of a war-fatigued Army and reinvigorated it to become one of the best fighting machines in Africa.

Buratai used transformational military leadership style to rejig the Army and led the Army to defeat Boko Harram terrorists until the late Shekau ran to pay allegiance to ISIS which led to the emergence of ISWAP. Amb. Buratai has made his mark on the lives of officers and men, and infrastructure of the Nigerian Army. He has also authored several books to encourage and motivate young officers.

The award presentation will take place on the 21st of October, 2021 at the Conference Hall, American University of Nigeria, Yola Adamawa State, with the theme: “Celebrating Excellence, Promoting Peace and Harmony”.
