In a tragic turn of events, the Nigerian Army’s 181 Amphibious Battalion faced a devastating ambush while on a peacekeeping mission in the Okuama Community of Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State. This ambush, occurring amidst a crisis between Okuama and Okoloba communities, resulted in the loss of several lives, including the Commanding Officer Lt Col AH Ali, 2 Majors, a Captain, 12 soldiers, and an innocent civilian.

The Defence Ministry, represented by Honourable Minister of Defence, H.E Muhammed Badaru Abubabar CON mni, and Honourable Minister of State for Defence, H.E Dr. Muhammed Bello Matawalle, MON, swiftly condemned the reprehensible act. They expressed deep sorrow for the fallen heroes and extended heartfelt condolences to their families, acknowledging the immense sacrifices made by servicemen and women in defending the nation.

In the same vein, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Toareed Lagbaja, has expressed condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and ordered a comprehensive investigation to ensure that those responsible face the full consequences of their actions. “Troops are fully committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice, leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit,” he said, adding that “Instead of cooperating with authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice, the Okuama community has chosen to engage in media manipulation and misinformation. This tactic, aimed at diverting attention from the heinous crime committed by their armed youth, is seen as a blatant attempt to justify their actions.”

Furthermore, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR has ordered a thorough investigation into the attack, directing the Chief of Defence Staff to ensure that the perpetrators face the full consequences of their cowardly actions.

The Defence Ministry emphasised the need for justice to prevail, “I urge the public to stand in solidarity with the families of the fallen soldiers. The government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and pledged to continue supporting the armed forces in their efforts to maintain peace and stability across the nation.”

As the nation mourns the loss of these brave individuals, the Defence Ministry called for unity and resilience in the face of adversity. They urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and cooperative with security agencies, emphasising that together, the country can overcome the challenges posed by violence and insecurity.
