The Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has clarified reports published in sections of the media regarding an individual intercepted by troops of the 68 Battalion during an exploitation operation following the terrorist attack at Cross Kauwa on 14 July 2026.
In a statement issued on 23 July 2026, the Theatre Command disclosed that the individual has been identified as Aboubakar Muhammad Zein-Nur, also known as Houdairi.
According to the military, troops acted in line with established operational procedures by taking the suspect into custody for profiling and investigation, considering the prevailing security situation and the use of border corridors by terrorist groups for movement and logistics.
Following comprehensive intelligence assessments and detailed investigations, Operation HADIN KAI confirmed that no evidence was found linking Zein-Nur to any terrorist organisation.
The investigation further established that he is a resident of Shattu Anguba Village, Bosso, Republic of Niger, and earns his livelihood as a camel rearer operating around the River Komadougou.
Based on the outcome of the investigation, the Theatre Command formally cleared the individual of any terrorist affiliation.
Operation HADIN KAI explained that individuals intercepted under suspicious circumstances during military operations are routinely subjected to security screening and due process to ensure innocent civilians are clearly distinguished from terrorist elements.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to conducting intelligence-driven operations while maintaining professionalism, respecting human rights and adhering to the rule of law.
The Theatre Command also reiterated its resolve to sustain ongoing operations aimed at denying Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists freedom of action across the North-East region while ensuring that legitimate security procedures are fairly applied to all persons encountered during operations.
The statement was signed by Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Maiduguri.
