Operation Peace Shield: 6 Brigade Troops Neutralise Armed Militia, Recover Weapons in Taraba

Troops of 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army, have successfully neutralised four armed militia members and recovered weapons following renewed communal violence in Usmanu Village, Karim Lamido Local Government Area, Taraba State.

The rapid deployment was in response to credible intelligence indicating a resurgence of long-standing land disputes between the Shomo and Wurkun communities, which had escalated into armed clashes resulting in property destruction, including the burning of homes.

Upon arrival, the troops came under fire from armed assailants near the Fadama axis. After a brief but intense exchange, four attackers were neutralised.

A subsequent sweep of the area led to the recovery of:

  • Three dane guns
  • One fabricated AK-47 rifle
  • Twenty-five rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition
  • Two motorcycles

In a notable development, a Nigeria Police Force (NPF) personnel operating alongside the armed militia was arrested and is undergoing further investigation to determine the extent of his involvement.

Commenting on the operation, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commander of 6 Brigade/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, praised the troops for their prompt action, bravery, and adherence to professional rules of engagement. He reiterated the Brigade’s commitment to ridding Taraba State of criminal elements and maintaining operational momentum across all areas of responsibility.

Brigadier General Uwa also called on local communities to embrace peaceful coexistence and assist security agencies with timely and credible information. He assured the people of Karim Lamido and Taraba State of the Army’s unwavering commitment to lasting peace and stability.

The Nigerian Army urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding as stability is gradually restored. Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest security formation, as operations continue under Operation Peace Shield, Operation Lafiya Nakowa, and Operation Zafin Wuta
