Operation SAFE HAVEN Inaugurates Peace Committee to Address Security Concerns in Bassa

In a proactive move to address security challenges in Plateau State, the Special Task Force Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH) has inaugurated a new 17-man Peace Committee tasked with implementing modalities to achieve lasting peace in Irigwe Land and the entire Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) and its environs.

Operation SAFE HAVEN has been actively seeking solutions to the persistent crisis that has resulted in attacks and reprisals in Plateau State. Earlier initiatives included the establishment of a 36-Man Joint Committee on September 11, 2021, to facilitate peace and reconciliation among various tribes in Bassa, Jos North and South, as well as Riyom LGAs.

In a bid to further peace-building efforts in Irigwe Land, the Mbra Ngwe of Irigwe Land inaugurated a 17-Man Implementation Committee to execute the recommendations of the 36-Man Committee specifically tailored to Irigwe Land. However, due to a decline in the Committee’s activities and issues of redundancy, there was a setback in peace-building efforts, leading to the dissolution of the former committee on May 10, 2024. Subsequently, a new 17-Man Peace Committee was established in Irigwe Land, inaugurated on May 15, 2024, at Headquarters 3 Division Auditorium.

Addressing the inauguration event at Headquarters 3 Division Nigerian Army (NA), Major General AE Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding 3 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Operation SAFE HAVEN, urged committee members to approach their tasks without bias, ensuring impartiality and fostering trust among all parties involved. He reiterated Operation SAFE HAVEN’s commitment to collaborating with other security agencies to advance the peace agenda of the Plateau State Government and urged the committee to implement recommendations within three months to facilitate peaceful coexistence.

Representatives from the Transition Implementation Committee Bassa LGA and the Plateau Peace Building Agency emphasised the importance of unity and urged the committee to prioritize the peace.
