Police Advocate Stronger Collaboration, Intelligence Sharing at 2026 South-East Security Summit
The Nigeria Police Force has called for stronger inter-agency collaboration, intelligence sharing and community-based policing as key strategies for tackling insecurity and promoting sustainable peace across the South-East.
The call was made at the 2026 South-East Regional Security Summit held at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, Abia State, under the theme, “Collaborative Approaches to Strengthening Security and Regional Stability.”
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc (+), NPM, was represented at the summit by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 9 Police Command Headquarters, Umuahia, AIG Nwonyi Polycarp Emeka, PhD, LLB, psc (+).
AIG Nwonyi was accompanied by the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, MSPSP, who represented the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 13 Police Headquarters, Ukpo, Anambra State.
The summit was organised by the Federal Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-East), bringing together senior government officials, security and law enforcement agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders to deliberate on security challenges affecting the region.
Representing the IGP, AIG Nwonyi participated in a high-level panel discussion focused on the prevailing security challenges in the South-East and practical measures for restoring lasting peace and stability.
He emphasised the importance of enhanced cooperation among security agencies, timely intelligence sharing, community-based policing, strategic engagement with stakeholders and sustained public support for security operations.
According to him, addressing insecurity requires a coordinated approach that places communities at the centre of security efforts while strengthening cooperation among government institutions, security agencies and citizens.
In recognition of his contributions to the summit and his commitment to advancing national security, AIG Nwonyi was presented with an award by the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), OFR.
The summit was declared open by the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), OFR; the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; representatives of the South-East governors; the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives; heads of security and law enforcement agencies; senior military and police officers; traditional rulers; religious leaders and other critical stakeholders.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with sister security agencies, governments at all levels and community stakeholders to promote sustainable peace, security and stability across the South-East.
