Police Uncover Illegal Firearms Fabrication Site, Arrest Seven in Yobe

The Yobe State Police Command has uncovered an illegal firearms fabrication workshop in Potiskum and arrested seven suspects in what it described as a major breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat crime and criminality across the state.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the command said operatives of the Potiskum Area Command, in collaboration with personnel from the Divisional Police Headquarters, carried out a coordinated operation based on credible intelligence.

According to the statement, police operatives raided a blacksmith workshop located at Tasha Adua along Danchuwa Road in Potiskum, where the illegal activities were allegedly taking place.

During the operation, seven suspects were arrested and several items were recovered, including two fabricated pistols, 24 muzzle pipes, nine gun butts, four unserviceable Dane guns, one filing machine and a sharp cutlass.

The police said preliminary findings indicate that the workshop was being used for the fabrication and modification of firearms.

The suspects are currently undergoing investigation to determine the extent of their involvement, identify possible collaborators and buyers, as well as establish the intended use of the fabricated weapons.

The Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, has directed investigators to intensify efforts to uncover other illegal firearms production centres within the state and assess the security implications of their activities.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring public safety and tackling the proliferation of illegal weapons.

The police command also warned residents against allowing their premises to be used for unlawful activities, including the manufacture of firearms and other dangerous weapons.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities or movements to the nearest police station or other relevant security agencies.

The command said the operation forms part of ongoing measures aimed at curbing the spread of illegal arms and strengthening security across Yobe State.
