President Tinubu and Governors Tackle Food Inflation and Insecurity at State House Meeting

President Bola Tinubu and the 36 state governors met at the State House on February 15, 2024, to address pressing challenges facing Nigeria, including rising food costs and insecurity.

The meeting resulted in several key agreements:

* President Tinubu announced plans to recruit more police personnel to strengthen the force.
* The federal government will collaborate with states and the National Assembly to establish a mechanism for state police, replacing the use of vigilantes.
* Governors were instructed to enhance their Forest Rangers and arm them to secure forests from criminals.

* President Tinubu directed state and federal governments to collaborate in increasing local food production.
* He advised against food importation and price controls, emphasizing the need to encourage local producers.
* Governors were urged to follow Kano State’s example in combating food hoarding and profiteering.
* The Inspector-General of Police, National Security Adviser, and Department of State Security Services were ordered to monitor warehouses and prevent profiteering.
* Governors were encouraged to prioritise livestock development, particularly poultry and fishing.

Additionally, President Tinubu emphasised the importance of:

* Clearing salary arrears, gratuities, and pensions to inject money into the economy.
* Creating economic opportunities for youth to foster productive engagement.

The President urged governors to utilise increased revenue from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) to address these issues.

The modalities for state police and further discussions on security measures will be addressed at the National Economic Council.
