PTDF, NNPC Ltd. Move to Strengthen Research Partnership, Deepen Innovation in Nigeria’s Energy Sector

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening research, innovation and human capital development in Nigeria’s energy sector through enhanced collaboration.

This formed the focus of a strategic visit by the Executive Secretary of PTDF, Professor Shuaibu Shehu Aliyu, who led the Fund’s management team to the Research, Technology and Innovation (RTI) Division of NNPC Ltd.

The delegation was received by the Chief Innovation Officer of NNPC Ltd., Mr. Rasheed O. Ojulari, alongside members of the RTI management team.

The meeting centred on advancing the implementation of the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two organisations, which provides a framework for collaboration in research and development across the energy value chain.

Areas covered under the agreement include joint research projects, establishment of collaborative laboratories, commercialisation of research outcomes, scholarship programmes and technical capacity-building initiatives.

Speaking during the visit, Professor Aliyu stressed the importance of translating the provisions of the MoU into practical outcomes through the establishment of a joint implementation committee.

He noted that the committee would drive concrete actions that align with the strategic objectives of both institutions while contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth and technological advancement.

The PTDF Executive Secretary reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to developing skilled manpower, strengthening institutional capacity and promoting research and innovation to support the nation’s oil and gas industry.

According to him, stronger collaboration between PTDF and NNPC Ltd. will help position Nigeria as a leading centre for oil and gas expertise in Africa, reduce capital flight, promote indigenous capacity and deepen local content in the energy sector.

In his remarks, Mr. Ojulari commended PTDF for its sustained investment in human capital development, describing the Fund as a critical partner in bridging the gap between academia and industry.

He acknowledged the outstanding performance of PTDF-sponsored scholars and noted that many professionals trained under the Fund’s programmes are making significant contributions within the RTI Division and across the Nigerian energy industry.

Ojulari added that the collaboration would further strengthen innovation, research excellence and sustainable growth in Nigeria’s petroleum sector through closer partnerships between industry and academic institutions.

The renewed partnership underscores the commitment of both PTDF and NNPC Ltd. to leveraging research, technology and innovation to drive Nigeria’s energy transition, enhance competitiveness and support long-term national development.
