Senate Advances Key Bills to Boost Agriculture, Security

Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, has highlighted major outcomes of the latest Senate plenary, where lawmakers advanced several legislative measures aimed at strengthening critical sectors of Nigeria’s economy.

During the session, six bills passed through the first reading stage, marking the beginning of legislative processes to address economic development priorities.

The Senate also considered a motion for the rescission and re-committal of the Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency Bill, 2026, to allow for further refinement following observations from relevant stakeholders.

In addition, a bill seeking to repeal and re-enact the Nigeria Police Trust Fund Act scaled second reading. The proposed legislation is designed to enhance the capacity, training, and welfare of the Nigeria Police Force.

Lawmakers further deliberated on reports from the Senate Committee on Agricultural Production, Services and Rural Development, covering key bills including the National Food Reserve Agency (Establishment) Bill, 2026; the National Cassava Policy Coordination Council Bill, 2026; and the National Rice Development Council of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2026.

Senator Jibrin commended the Chairman of the Committee, Saliu Mustapha, and members for their efforts in advancing the legislative proposals.

He noted that the bills, once passed into law, would reposition Nigeria’s agricultural sector by boosting productivity, strengthening value chains, and enhancing food security nationwide.

Highlighting the importance of cassava production, Jibrin said increased support for the crop would not only improve food availability but also provide raw materials for agro-based industries.

Observers say the legislative efforts signal renewed focus on agriculture and security as key pillars of national development.
