Researchers at the National University of Singapore have developed a smart textile that integrates a touchscreen into a shirt sleeve, allowing users to display photos and videos and interact with the fabric through finger presses.

The technology uses 54 electronic fibres woven into the sleeve to create a colour display measuring 168 × 105 millimetres, with a resolution of 96 × 54 pixels.

According to the researchers, the wearable display can receive images via Bluetooth, run a calculator, show compass readings and respond to voice commands.

The smart garment also incorporates a microphone, speaker and sensors capable of detecting movement, temperature and ambient light. An additional sensor can measure body temperature when positioned under the arm.

In tests, the researchers reported that the display maintained nearly the same brightness and touch responsiveness after 50 machine-wash cycles and 1,000 bending cycles, suggesting that the technology could withstand some of the everyday demands placed on clothing.

The research team describes the innovation as the world’s first touchscreen integrated into a garment, combining electronic functionality with wearable fabric.

However, the technology remains a research prototype and is not yet commercially available.

The development highlights ongoing efforts to integrate electronic systems into textiles, potentially expanding the applications of wearable technology in communication, health monitoring and everyday computing.
