Somali FIFA Referee Omar Artan Honoured by Kuwait After U.S. World Cup Visa Setback

Celebrated Somali FIFA referee Omar Artan has been honoured by the Kuwait Football Association (KFA) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to international football, weeks after he was reportedly denied entry into the United States ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Kuwait Football Association presented the award on Monday, praising Artan’s achievements and professionalism on the international stage.

Following the recognition, Artan officiated the 2025–2026 Zain Premier League title-deciding match between Kuwait SC and Al Qadsia SC.

The championship encounter, attended by the Chairman of the Kuwait Football Association, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Yousef Al-Sabah, ended with Kuwait SC emerging champions of the league.

The honour comes shortly after Artan made international headlines following reports that he was denied entry into the United States, where he had been expected to participate in activities related to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite the setback, his recognition in Kuwait highlights his continued standing as one of Africa’s respected football referees.
