Tiered Grass Plaza Transforms Lunchtime Experience for Office Workers in Shanghai

A uniquely designed tiered grass plaza in Shanghai is changing the way office workers spend their lunch breaks, offering a peaceful outdoor space for relaxation in the heart of the city’s bustling business district.

Located in a sunken plaza surrounded by high-rise office buildings in Xuhui District, the stepped lawn has become a popular retreat where workers leave their offices to rest, read or simply enjoy the open air.

Designed by architecture and planning firm Sasaki Associates, the landscaped space features broad grass-covered steps built at a gentle angle to provide the comfort of a lounge chair. The design was developed after extensive testing to determine the most comfortable slope for visitors.

Each tier measures approximately 50 centimetres in height and more than one metre in width, while trees planted around the plaza provide natural shade, creating a cool and inviting environment.

On sunny afternoons, the green space attracts dozens of office workers seeking a break from the fast-paced corporate environment, with many using the area to nap, read or unwind.

The project highlights how thoughtfully designed public spaces can improve urban living by introducing nature into densely built commercial districts and promoting relaxation and well-being among city residents.

The innovative landscape is part of Runway Park in Shanghai’s Xuhui District and has drawn attention as an example of how small green spaces can transform everyday experiences in modern cities.
