Umahi hails Julius Berger as construction giant hands over Second Niger Bridge to FG

The construction giant and contractor behind the iconic Second Niger Bridge, Julius Berger, has officially handed over the multi-billion naira project to the Federal Government. The formal transfer took place in a brief ceremony at the toll area of the bridge.

Expressing his satisfaction with the completed project, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, acknowledged Julius Berger’s efforts in addressing vandalized portions of the bridge through necessary repairs. Umahi commended the construction giant for its commitment to delivering a quality infrastructure project.

During the handover ceremony, Minister Umahi announced that the Second Niger Bridge is now open to concession opportunities for private companies willing to undertake the completion of ancillary roads, toll collection, and investment recoupment. This move aims to engage the private sector in contributing to the ongoing development and maintenance of critical infrastructure.

Umahi hinted at ongoing efforts to devise strategies for managing traffic at both the old and new bridges, particularly during the festive period, ensuring smooth and efficient transportation for the public.

The Second Niger Bridge, spanning 1.6 kilometres, serves as a vital link connecting Anambra and Delta states. The completion of this long-awaited project marks a significant milestone in the nation’s infrastructure development, enhancing connectivity and trade between the two states.

Originally proposed during the 1978/79 political campaign by then-candidate Shehu Shagari of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), the Second Niger Bridge stands as a testament to the enduring efforts to realize crucial infrastructure projects for the benefit of the Nigerian people.
