The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina J. Mohammed, has continued her official engagements in Nigeria with visits to Zamfara State and Benue State, where she met with government officials, displaced communities, and key stakeholders on development and humanitarian issues.

In Zamfara, she was received in Gusau on April 9 by Governor Dauda Lawal and members of the state executive council. During the visit, the UN Deputy Secretary-General reaffirmed the organisation’s support for the state and the wider North-West region in key sectors including education, healthcare, agriculture, gender development, climate action, and solid minerals.

She also visited a mining site in Kadiri community, Maru Local Government Area, and held engagements with wives of Northern governors, emphasizing the importance of women’s participation in governance. She advocated support for the Reserved Seats for Women Bill, highlighting gender balance as critical to national development.

In Benue, the UN official was received in Makurdi on April 10 by Governor Hyacinth Alia. Her visit focused largely on humanitarian concerns, particularly the plight of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

She visited communities affected by recent violence, including Yelewata, where she listened to women recount their experiences and called for strengthened peacebuilding, resilience, and dignity for affected populations.

At the Makurdi Mega IDP camp, displaced persons expressed appreciation to UNICEF Nigeria and International Organization for Migration (IOM) for ongoing support, while appealing for assistance to return safely to their ancestral homes and rebuild their livelihoods.

During an interaction with schoolchildren in a makeshift classroom within the camp, UNICEF pledged to provide desks and chairs to improve learning conditions.

At the Benue State Government House, Governor Alia outlined ongoing state initiatives, while Amina Mohammed reiterated the UN’s commitment to supporting the state’s development priorities.

The visit underscores the United Nations’ continued engagement with subnational governments in Nigeria to address development challenges, promote gender inclusion, and strengthen humanitarian response efforts.
