University don harps on Nigeria’s unity

By Matthew Atungwu

Executive Director, Institute of Strategic and Development Communication (ISDEVCOM), Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and President of the Nigerian Centre of International Theatre Institute (ITI), Professor Emmanuel Dandaura, says unity is the only way to make Nigeria grow in all ramifications.

Prof Dandaura stated this on Sunday in his keynote address at the OurNigeria Awards 2023 in Abuja, saying unity comes from the meeting of the minds.

He said Nigeria was a beautiful country by all standards having both human and natural resources, charging everyone to be involved in the process of building unity.

He said, “We have all that God will give a nation. Is it abundant human resources? Is it also natural resources” We have. We also have renewable potential in renewable energy, which includes solar, wind, and hydropower. Our technology and innovation base is one of the best because we’re highly creative use.”

In an engaging revelation, the professor shared results from a survey he conducted among 380 young people across Nigeria, stating that 96% of them expressed dissatisfaction with the state of unity in the country. Their concerns ranged from nepotism and corruption to insecurity, unemployment, and leadership failures.

Notably, Prof. Dandaura highlighted a significant finding: “Out of the total respondents, 98% suggested changes directed at political leaders, government officials, religious leaders, and external actors. Only 2% included changes they should make themselves for a united and progressive Nigeria.”

The lecturer pushed for a mental adjustment, stressing the value of each person’s unique contribution to nation-building. He emphasized that residents must work together to maintain unity and that they cannot rely only on outside forces to bring about change.

In his assessment of Nigeria’s potential, Prof. Dandaura highlighted the country’s wealth of natural and human resources, advantageous location, and innovative culture. He emphasized the necessity for people to adopt a positive outlook and strive towards harmony and advancement.
