US-based Nigerian lecturer killed by prince’s guard in Osun

A United State-based Nigerian lecturer, Dr Richard Adeoriokin, was on Saturday evening shot dead by a prince’s guard in Osun state on Saturday.

Our Correspondent gathered that, the incident occurred at the residence of Prince Eniola Oyeyode of Ejigbo, who had instructed his guard, Hammed Jelili, to fire his double-barrel gun into the air to test its condition. Jelili, however, aimed at the victim and killed him on the spot.

He was rushed to a hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival by a doctor.

Dr Adeoriokin, who was a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state, had attended the 50th coronation anniversary of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Omowonuola Oyeyode Oyesosin II, before the tragic event.

The police spokesperson in Osun, SP Yemisi Opalola who confirmed the arrest of Prince Oyeyode and his guard appealed to the public to remain calm as investigation into the matter had started.

She also stated that the Commissioner of Police in Osun, Mr Bzigu Kwazhi, had directed law enforcement agencies to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the incident and ensure that justice was served.

The state governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke who has already called for the probe of the killing, also expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and called for pre-emptive action by security agencies to prevent any possible counter-attack or eruption of violence in the ancient town following the sad incident.

He urged the families of the deceased not to take the law into their own hands and dispatched a high-powered delegation to visit Ejigbo to ensure the restoration of calm while investigations continue.

The governor also said that he had instructed the police to issue guidelines on the usage of local guns to enhance the safety and protection of citizens, especially at public functions.
