VIPs Protest Replacement of Police Escorts With Civil Defence Operatives

Several high-profile individuals in Nigeria have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s decision to replace their police escorts with operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The VIPs, who include politicians, business executives, and traditional leaders, argue that the NSCDC is not adequately equipped or trained to provide the level of protection required for individuals facing high-security risks.

According to them, police escorts have years of specialised security training, experience in handling high-threat environments, and a deeper understanding of intelligence gathering — capacities they believe many NSCDC operatives lack.

Some VIPs also raised concerns about response time, logistics, and the ability of NSCDC personnel to manage armed ambushes, kidnapping attempts, or coordinated attacks — threats that have become common in parts of the country.

They further warned that downgrading their security could expose them to greater risks, stressing that the change should not be implemented without thorough assessment of individual threat levels.

Despite the complaints, the government maintains that the new policy is aimed at reforming VIP protection, reducing misuse of police personnel, and redeploying officers to boost public security operations nationwide.
