Speaking while declaring the training open in Birnin Kebbi, Mahmud said: “We are bringing in new innovations to enhance electoral process in the country,” adding that the changes would be challenging.

He explained that it is imperative to properly equip the staff of the Commission with information on relevant technologies and to ensure that the staff are remain professional and ethical.

He said, the changes the Commission was making are fundamental and with the prospect of altering the electoral landscape of the country.

“Any staff who cannot locate himself within these changes and or adapt to the new realities of the electoral process will sadly find himself to be a burden if not an impediment to the wheel of progress,” the REC said.

He further stated that, the expansion of access to polling units and movement of voting points to unserved and unreserved areas as standalone polling units are currently on going.

The REC added that in the next few days, the Commission will conclude the consultative phase and release clear guidelines for the movement of voting points to decongest the existing voting points.

He also revealed that the continue voter’s registration exercise will be resumed as soon as the expansion of access to polling units is completed.

“A top priority of the Commission at this moment is to usher in a new electoral legal framework that will give legal backing to new and recently introduced innovations in the conduct of elections,” the REC stated.
