Emerging research suggests that women may require slightly more sleep than men due to increased brain activity and the demands of multitasking.

Professor Jim Horne, Director of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University, found that women tend to multitask more and engage a greater portion of their brain throughout the day. Studies indicate that women often have stronger connections between the left and right hemispheres of the brain, enabling them to process logic, emotion, memory, and intuition simultaneously.
Experts say this continuous mental engagement increases the need for recovery during sleep.
Further findings from researchers at University of Southampton, Stanford University, and Harvard University show that women tend to spend more time in Non-REM Sleep—a critical phase when the brain slows down and undergoes restoration.
Sleep specialist Michelle Drerup of the Cleveland Clinic noted that women are also more likely to experience factors that disrupt sleep quality, further increasing their need for adequate rest.
Health professionals emphasise that waking up tired may not necessarily indicate laziness, but rather a biological need for more restorative sleep. They advise prioritising consistent and sufficient sleep as part of overall well-being.
