Work Resumes at NUPRC as Unions Suspend One-Day Strike

Normal activities have resumed at the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) following the suspension of a one-day strike embarked upon by workers’ unions within the agency.

The industrial action was called off on the night of June 1, 2026, after successful negotiations between the management of the Commission and its two in-house unions, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).

According to the NUPRC, the strike lasted for about 12 hours and affected only administrative operations, while core regulatory activities across oil and gas facilities nationwide continued without disruption.

The Commission emphasized that crude oil production and other critical petroleum operations remained unaffected throughout the period of the industrial action.

NUPRC also urged members of the public to disregard reports suggesting that the strike disrupted crude oil production or affected the nation’s petroleum output.

The Commission further dismissed publications claiming that the disagreement was linked to issues surrounding foreign training opportunities, describing such reports as misleading and inaccurate.

Management assured staff of its commitment to improving the working environment and addressing concerns raised during discussions with the unions.

The Commission also reiterated its commitment to staff welfare, capacity building and professional development in line with the objectives of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

In a statement, the Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Eniola Akinkuotu, said the resolution of the dispute reflects the commitment of both management and labour unions to maintaining industrial harmony and ensuring the effective discharge of the Commission’s regulatory responsibilities.

With the suspension of the strike, employees have returned to their duties, bringing administrative operations at the Commission back to normal.
