In a heartwarming ceremony, 832 artisans, most of whom were orphaned due to the prolonged Boko Haram insurgency, celebrated their graduation from the Borno State Enterprise Institute. The event, presided over by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, took place at the Muna Vocational Enterprise Institute along the Dikwa-Gamboru highway in Jere Local Government Area.
These resilient trainees were meticulously selected from all 27 local government areas of Borno State and have successfully completed training in 14 diverse trades. Among the graduates, 54 specialized in aluminum fabrication, 29 in bricklaying, 48 in carpentry, and 73 in information technology. The vocational spectrum also included expertise in barbing, electrical work, leatherworks, plumbing, mechanics, solar technology, tailoring, tie and dye, welding, and hairdressing.
Governor Zulum emphasized that similar vocational institutes have been established in Biu, Shani, Mafa, and Magumeri. Furthermore, plans are underway to revive vocational centers in Dikwa, Kaga, Ngala, Gajiram, and Monguno.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Zulum underscored the critical role of these institutes in tackling youth unemployment and providing sustainable livelihoods. He stated, “Upon assuming office, one of the primary objectives of my administration has been youth empowerment. We were acutely aware of the devastating impact of insurgency on our communities, leaving many without means of livelihood and leading to widespread unemployment, idleness, and despair. As the saying goes, ‘An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.’ To address these challenges head-on, we established Vocational Enterprise Institutes, focusing on admitting vulnerable individuals, particularly those affected by the insurgency, to equip them with skills for sustainable livelihoods.”
Governor Zulum’s commitment extends beyond training. He has approved the distribution of starter kits worth N847,277,297 to each of the 832 trained artisans, along with an additional N349,440,000 one-year labor-intensive public work grant to foster self-reliance. Moreover, the governor has granted automatic employment to the 64 best artisans who achieved over 90 percent in both their specialized trades and academic assessments.
This graduation marks a significant step toward empowering these resilient individuals, turning their skills into opportunities, and fostering hope in the face of adversity.
