“Nigeria to be self-reliant in defence equipment production” – Defence Minister
The Minister of Defence, Muhammed Badaru Abubakar, has said that Nigeria is on the verge of becoming self-reliant in the production of military equipment and hardware, following the passage of the new Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) bill by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Abubakar made this remark during a one-day inspection tour of DICON facilities in Kaduna State, where he expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the corporation and its partners in developing and manufacturing defence gadgets and equipment.
He said “the new DICON bill, which was signed into law by President Tinubu, would boost the economy and create jobs, as well as enhance the security and sovereignty of the nation.”
Speaking further, the minister asserted that “The new DICON bill is a game-changer for the defence sector in Nigeria. It will enable us to produce our own military equipment and hardware, without depending on foreign imports. This will save us a lot of money, create employment opportunities, and strengthen our national security and defence capabilities.”
He commended the Director-General of DICON, Major General AE Edet, and his team for their efforts and achievements, as well as the private sector partners, such as Imperium DICON Complex, Proforce Nigeria Limited, EPAIL Ltd, and others, for investing in the local production of defence equipment.
He said some of the products being produced by DICON and its partners include bulletproof vests, ballistic helmets, guard booths, and light armoured assault vehicles.
He said: “I am impressed by the level of work done by DICON and its partners. They have shown that Nigeria has the potential and the capacity to produce world-class defence equipment. I urge them to keep up the good work and ensure that all the projects are completed and commissioned as soon as possible.”
He added that Nigeria would soon become a major exporter of defence equipment to other African countries and beyond, as DICON and its partners have demonstrated their competence and quality.
He said: “Nigeria is not only producing for its own needs, but also for the needs of other countries. We have received requests and orders from several African countries and beyond, who are interested in our products. This shows that we have a competitive edge and a global reputation in the defence industry.”
Thanking President Tinubu for his support and vision for the defence sector, the minister said: “President Tinubu is a visionary leader who has the interest of Nigerians at heart. He has given us the necessary support and guidance to transform the defence sector and make Nigeria a force to reckon with in the global arena. We are grateful to him and we assure him of our loyalty and dedication.”
