In the aftermath of the devastating flood disaster that ravaged Maiduguri and its environs, former Chief of Army Staff and former Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, has embarked on a humanitarian mission to support the victims and demonstrate solidarity with the state government.

During a courtesy call on Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, Ambassador Buratai commended the government’s swift response to the disaster and prayed for the victims to find the strength to bear their losses. He also emphasized the importance of residents adopting measures to mitigate similar disasters in the future.

Governor Zulum expressed gratitude to General Buratai for his gesture and pledged to utilize the donations judiciously. He acknowledged Buratai’s consistent support, dating back to his tenure as Chief of Army Staff and continuing even in his capacity as a private citizen.

Speaking to journalists, General Buratai explained that his humanitarian effort was facilitated through the TY Buratai Humanity Care and Tukur and Tukur Foundations. These organizations provided medical relief, food, and palliatives to affected individuals.

The humanitarian mission provided comprehensive support to the flood-affected communities. Through the TY Buratai Humanity Care and Tukur and Tukur Foundations, the team offered medical relief to alleviate the suffering of the victims. This included treatment for malaria, nutritional support, and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) care. Additionally, free drugs were distributed to those suffering from diabetes.

General Buratai emphasized the importance of collective support, stating, “Such efforts should not be left to the state government alone. Individuals and organizations should come out and support.” His team also visited the Shehu of Borno’s Palace, which was affected by the flood, to commiserate with the traditional ruler and offer prayers.

As a renowned military leader, General Buratai has through this humanitarian initiative, demonstrated his commitment to the well-being of Nigerians, even beyond his military service.
