Nigeria has announced the discovery of a world-class polymetallic mineral province in Kaduna State, a development that could significantly strengthen the country’s position in the global critical minerals market and accelerate efforts to diversify the economy beyond oil.
The discovery, verified by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency, reportedly contains high-grade deposits of platinum group metals, lithium, gold, nickel, copper and rare earth elements—minerals that are increasingly in demand for the production of electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies, advanced batteries and other high-tech industrial applications.
According to information presented at the AFNIS Summit 2026, the discovery was made through exploration activities conducted by a private company with support from government agencies. Preliminary assessments indicate that one of the identified sites contains an estimated 3.3 million metric tonnes of lithium reserves.
Industry experts note that lithium, nickel, copper and rare earth elements have become strategic resources in the global transition toward cleaner energy and low-carbon technologies, making the Kaduna discovery potentially significant for both Nigeria and international supply chains.
The development comes as Nigeria intensifies efforts to unlock the value of its vast solid minerals sector. Government estimates suggest that the country’s untapped critical mineral resources could be worth more than $700 billion. Despite this potential, mining currently contributes less than one per cent to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Officials believe the discovery could attract substantial local and foreign investment, create jobs, stimulate industrial development and increase government revenue through the expansion of responsible mining activities.
The Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has repeatedly emphasized the importance of developing the mining sector as part of broader economic diversification efforts aimed at reducing dependence on crude oil revenues.
Analysts say the discovery could mark a turning point for Nigeria’s mining industry if supported by sustained exploration, transparent regulation, value-addition policies and investments in processing infrastructure.
With global demand for critical minerals expected to rise sharply over the coming decades, the Kaduna find has the potential to position Nigeria as a major player in the emerging clean energy and advanced manufacturing supply chain.
