Security sources disclosed that the troops responded to a distress call on Sunday while conducting routine fighting and confidence-building patrols in the area. The swift deployment enabled security personnel to intercept the attackers before they could carry out their mission.

On reaching the scene, the troops reportedly came under attack and engaged the suspected terrorists in a fierce gun battle. During the exchange, two of the assailants, identified as Dantaraba and Golozo, were neutralised, while several others escaped with suspected gunshot injuries.

Items recovered during the operation included an AK-47 rifle, an AK-47 magazine, a damaged pistol, a pistol magazine, six rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, nine rounds of 9mm pistol ammunition, an ATM card, a Moniepoint ATM card and other personal effects.

Military sources said the timely intervention prevented what could have been a devastating attack on the busy Tor Donga Yam Market, a major commercial hub frequented by traders and residents from surrounding communities.

The operation ensured that business activities continued uninterrupted and reinforced confidence among residents in the security measures being implemented across the state.

The Force Commander of Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their courage, professionalism and rapid response, describing the operation as a testament to the effectiveness of ongoing security efforts in the region.

He also praised the Benue State Civil Protection Guard for its continued collaboration with the military in combating criminality and safeguarding communities.

Major General Gara further expressed appreciation to members of the public for providing timely and credible intelligence, noting that community support remains critical to the success of security operations.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious activities to security agencies, stressing that maintaining peace and security is a shared responsibility between security forces and the public.
