By Matthew Eloyi

A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fact-finding team, led by Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, arrived in Gusau on Tuesday, 14th January 2025, to investigate reports of civilian casualties following a recent airstrike in the state.

The mission, initiated by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, seeks to ensure a comprehensive assessment of the incident, which occurred on 11th January, while adhering to international operational standards.

During a meeting with Governor Dauda Lawal at the Government House, the team leader reaffirmed NAF’s unwavering commitment to professionalism and transparency. Air Vice Marshal Gabkwet emphasised the service’s respect for the lives of all Nigerians, describing it as a core value of the NAF. He assured that the investigation would be thorough and impartial, underscoring the Air Force’s dedication to minimizing collateral damage in military operations.

Governor Lawal expressed support for the military’s efforts against banditry and acknowledged the challenges of complex military engagements. While he noted that the collateral damage from the airstrike was regrettable, he underscored his understanding that the incident was unintentional. The Governor also urged the team to convey his appreciation to the CAS for NAF’s crucial role in securing Zamfara State.

Following the meeting, the NAF delegation proceeded to Tungar Kara, the site of the airstrikes, for an on-the-ground assessment. The information gathered will contribute to enhancing the Air Force’s strategies for protecting civilians and infrastructure during operations aimed at eradicating terrorism and banditry in the North West.

The visit demonstrates the NAF’s commitment to accountability and strengthening public confidence in its operations.
