DHQ Clears Air Over Identity of Slain Terror Commander

By Matthew Eloyi

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified reports surrounding the recent killing of a notorious terrorist commander, Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, during a joint military operation conducted with the United States Africa Command on May 16, 2026.

The clarification followed public concerns triggered by media reports recalling a similar operation in 2024 in which another terrorist commander bearing the same name was reportedly eliminated.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the military explained that the use of identical names, aliases and nom de guerres is common among members of ISWAP and Boko Haram operating within Nigeria’s North-East and the Lake Chad Basin.

According to the DHQ, the practice forms part of the terrorists’ indoctrination strategy aimed at concealing identities and creating confusion during counter-terrorism operations.

“The Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki eliminated on 16 May, 2026 has been positively identified through human intelligence and technical surveillance as a senior global operative within the Islamic State network, with direct links to international terrorist coordination, funding and operations across the Sahel,” the statement said.

The military stressed that there was “no ambiguity” regarding the identity of the slain commander.

The DHQ described the successful strike as a major breakthrough in ongoing counter-terrorism efforts, noting that the Armed Forces of Nigeria, in collaboration with the United States, remained committed to dismantling terrorist networks threatening regional security.

It also urged members of the public and the media to rely solely on official sources for verified information in order to avoid confusion arising from similarities in terrorist aliases.

Major General Uba reaffirmed the military’s commitment to sustained operations against insurgent groups and pledged continued transparency in communicating developments to the public.
