Heroic Imam Saves Nearly 300 Christians During 2018 Plateau Attacks

In 2018, a remarkable act of courage and humanity took place in Nghar village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, when Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, an elderly Muslim cleric, risked his life to protect nearly 300 Christians during a deadly religious conflict.

As violence erupted in the community, Imam Abubakar opened the doors of his mosque and home, sheltering men, women, and children who were fleeing for their lives. When the attackers arrived, demanding to know where the Christians were hiding, the Imam stood firmly and declared that they would have to kill him first before harming anyone under his protection. His bravery and moral conviction prevented a massacre that could have claimed hundreds of lives.

Imam Abdullahi’s selfless act earned him widespread admiration across Nigeria and beyond, becoming a symbol of unity, compassion, and religious tolerance. In recognition of his extraordinary courage, the Federal Government of Nigeria honoured him in 2022, celebrating him as a national hero who chose humanity over hatred.


Biography & History of Imam Abdullahi Abubakar

Born around 1936 in Bauchi State, Imam Abdullahi moved to Nghar village in Gashish District, Barkin Ladi LGA, Plateau State, as a young man. He became the Chief Imam of the local mosque, marrying and settling in the community, where he built bridges across religious divides. His mosque was reportedly constructed on land donated by the Christian community, reflecting his dedication to interfaith harmony.

On June 23, 2018, during a violent attack by suspected herdsmen, Imam Abdullahi hid more than 260 Christians (some reports say around 300) inside his mosque and home. When confronted by the attackers, he told them everyone inside was Muslim, averting further bloodshed. Observers say his courageous act likely saved hundreds of lives that night.
