The research team, led by Andreas Beilke-Gorzo, found that cannabis consumption could help slow down age-related cognitive decline when used by elderly individuals. According to the study, certain compounds in cannabis may influence brain activity in a way that supports memory and learning functions that typically weaken with age.
The researchers explained that the aging brain undergoes natural changes that can affect mental sharpness, but their findings indicate that cannabinoids may help regulate these processes, potentially reducing the speed of brain aging in older people.
Experts, however, caution that the findings do not encourage uncontrolled use. They stress that further clinical studies are needed to determine safe dosages, long-term effects, and medical guidelines, especially given the varying health conditions of older adults.
The study adds to a growing body of international research examining the medical potential of cannabis, particularly in age-related neurological health, while reinforcing the importance of medical supervision and responsible use.
