Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has expressed optimism that insecurity in the country will soon be brought under control, assuring that Bola Ahmed Tinubu is working tirelessly to restore peace and stability nationwide.
Shettima made the remarks on Tuesday in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, while formally receiving Governor Dauda Lawal and his supporters into the All Progressives Congress (APC) on behalf of the President.
“We pray for more unity and progress under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu because our leader is working very hard to ensure the safety of lives and property across Nigeria,” the Vice President said.
He noted that the prevailing security challenges in Zamfara and other affected states are surmountable, adding that increased collaboration between federal and state governments would accelerate progress. He also expressed confidence that Governor Lawal’s defection to the APC would strengthen efforts to tackle insecurity in the state.
The Vice President further asserted that opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), would struggle to gain ground in Zamfara, citing what he described as growing political unity in the state.
Also speaking, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who represented the Senate President, said members of the National Assembly under the APC fully support the governor’s move, describing it as a step that would enhance development and governance.
Similarly, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, described the defection as a historic moment, declaring that Zamfara had effectively returned to the fold of the ruling party.
Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, welcomed the governor, assuring him of the support of APC governors nationwide.
On his part, APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, formally handed over the party’s flag and symbol to Governor Lawal, describing Zamfara as now firmly aligned with the APC.
In his remarks, Governor Dauda Lawal expressed appreciation for the support of political stakeholders, including former governors such as Bello Matawalle and Abdulazeez Yari, pledging to work for the unity and progress of the state under the APC platform.
The event drew prominent political figures and supporters, marking a significant shift in Zamfara’s political landscape ahead of future elections.
