Book on Buratai’s Leadership During Security Challenges Set for Launch in Abuja

A new book examining the leadership and reforms of former Chief of Army Staff, LT-General Tukur Yusufu Buratai (Rtd), CFR, during one of Nigeria’s most challenging security periods is set to be unveiled in Abuja.

Authored by Dr. M.S. Abubakar and published by Sprezzatura Publishing Ltd, the book explores the concept of transformational leadership through the lens of the Nigerian Army’s operations between 2015 and 2021.

According to the author, the publication is not a biography of the former army chief but a scholarly assessment of how leadership, doctrine, troop welfare, training, logistics, morale, and civil-military relations were transformed during a period marked by insurgency, banditry, and other security threats across the country.

The study examines three key areas: the adaptation of military doctrine in the fight against Boko Haram and ISWAP as well as emerging threats in the North-West and Middle Belt; institutional reforms in training, logistics, equipment, and command structures; and the impact of leadership decisions on troop morale, combat effectiveness, and public trust.

Dr. M.S. noted that the “Buratai Era” serves as a case study in crisis leadership, highlighting the innovations, challenges, and strategic decisions that shaped the Nigerian Army’s response to evolving security threats.

The author further stated that the lessons contained in the book extend beyond military operations, offering insights into institution building, leadership under pressure, system reforms, and governance.

The official public presentation and academic discourse on the book is scheduled to hold on September 16, 2026, at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja.

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, is expected to serve as the Royal Father of the Day at the event.

Organisers said the programme will be structured as an academic discourse featuring expert panels comprising retired senior military officers and academics who will critically examine the book’s findings and discuss lessons relevant to Nigeria’s security sector and leadership development.

Attendance at the event will be by registration, with organisers indicating that an online registration link will be released in the coming days to enable interested participants obtain free electronic tickets due to limited seating capacity.

The publication is expected to contribute to ongoing discussions on leadership, security sector reforms, and national development, while providing a documented reference for students, researchers, policymakers, and security practitioners.
