The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has inaugurated the Nigeria Road Assessment Programme (NigeriaRAP) Steering Committee as part of efforts to strengthen road infrastructure safety and reduce traffic crashes and fatalities across the country.
Speaking during the inaugural meeting held at the FRSC National Headquarters in Abuja, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, described the initiative as a major step towards achieving safer roads and meeting global road safety targets.
He noted that road traffic crashes remain a significant public health and development challenge worldwide, stressing that proactive assessment of road infrastructure is essential to protecting road users and saving lives.
According to the Corps Marshal, NigeriaRAP was established through a partnership between the FRSC and the International Road Assessment Programme to systematically evaluate road infrastructure, identify high-risk sections, and improve safety for all road users, particularly vulnerable groups.
He explained that the programme is built on three key pillars: strengthening local partnerships, fostering international collaboration, and promoting the attainment of Three-Star Road Safety Ratings and above on Nigerian roads.
Shehu Mohammed recalled that Nigeria’s journey towards institutionalising the programme began with the inauguration of a stakeholders committee in February 2021 and was further reinforced with the signing of a National Licence Agreement between the FRSC and iRAP on November 18, 2025, formally launching NigeriaRAP in the country.
He said the newly inaugurated Steering Committee would provide strategic leadership, coordination and direction for the successful implementation of the programme nationwide.
Membership of the committee includes representatives of key public and private sector organisations such as the Federal Ministry of Works, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology, the Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria, Green Light Initiative, KRSD Foundation and other strategic partners committed to improving road safety in Nigeria.
The Corps Marshal commended members of the committee for their commitment to the initiative and urged them to remain proactive in carrying out their responsibilities.
He expressed confidence that through sustained collaboration, strategic investments and collective action, NigeriaRAP would play a critical role in reducing road traffic deaths and creating a safer road transport environment across the country.
The inauguration marks another significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to improve road infrastructure safety and strengthen measures aimed at protecting lives on the nation’s highways.
