Former Arsenal Star Nigel Winterburn Voices Concern Over Trossard’s Post-Injury Form

Former Nigel Winterburn has raised concerns about Leandro Trossard’s form since returning from injury, noting that the Belgium international has yet to regain his top performance level for Arsenal.

Trossard, who has scored seven goals across all competitions this season, including five in the Premier League, has not found the net since December. However, he has contributed crucial assists in his last two Champions League appearances, helping the Gunners secure victories over Bayer Leverkusen and Inter Milan.

The forward’s recent absence from the Belgium national team due to injury concerns has added to Arsenal’s injury woes. The Belgian FA confirmed that Trossard was withdrawn from the squad to continue rehabilitation under optimal conditions. He joins a growing list of players, including Martin Zubimendi, Piero Hincapie, Declan Rice, Noni Madueke, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba, Eberechi Eze, and Jurrien Timber, who have all missed international duty due to fitness issues.

Winterburn explained that Trossard’s dip in form is a natural consequence of his injury layoff. “Trossard was injured, and I don’t think he’s come back to his highest level,” Winterburn told AceOdds.com. He also highlighted the impact of player rotations, noting Gabriel Martinelli’s sporadic appearances and previous scoring run.

The former Arsenal defender suggested that the club might look to strengthen its wide positions in the upcoming transfer window. Paris Saint-Germain’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was named as a potential target to boost Arsenal’s attacking options. “If Arsenal are looking at upgrading a position, then it would be on that left-hand side… if we can afford you, come on in,” Winterburn added.

Arsenal will be hoping for a fully fit Trossard as they resume a crucial period in their season, competing on three fronts. The Gunners face an FA Cup quarter-final against Southampton this weekend, a Champions League quarter-final against Sporting Lisbon next week, and will continue their pursuit of the Premier League title with a fixture against Bournemouth on April 11, aiming to maintain their nine-point lead over Manchester City.
